Vito Acconci
-Integrated Approach to the Public Space Design-

Yun Sun Shim

The architects make not only the physical space, but also make the shape of life by designing the physical space and inserting program in it. Conventionally, the up-down process by the architect or political and economical power has been performed, degrading citizens into passive users of city. The result of this process seemed like the systemic, logical and reasonable which ensure the public convenience and profits. But in many cases, we can find out violent power which dominates public realm, moreover our lifestyle. A lot of urban spaces have not met the residents and users’ desire for ideal life in the city. Consequently, the concept of ‘Public’ has been emerged as one of the most important concept for urban planning and architecture.
Among urban activities which pursuit the value of ‘Public’, some kind of integrated approach with art and architecture is coming into spotlight as an suggestive method for public space design. The main person who lead this trend is Vito Acconci, who is estimated as both an artist and architect.
Firstly, It is necessary to examine Vito Acconci’s attitude toward the public space which has very controversial definition: public forms, public meaning or public effects. In his theoretical writings ‘Making Public’, Acconci(1993) explains that public space, on a city plan, is an in between place, or an out-of-the-way place. Public space is made by government agency or by a private corporation, as a kind of products. The public space can be sometimes defined as the space occupied by private bodies and moreover as the last gasp of the civilized world, belief, religion and wishful thinking; consequently as not a space itself, but as the presentation of space.
These concepts about the public space could be understood that those had brought up from his early artistic work of which theme was about individuals and relationship between them. Among early artistic works, there were three significant projects which show his view about the public space: ’Who are in anyway(1976)’, Instant House(1980)’ and ‘Bed Dream House(1980)’,

After that, Expanding the area of works, He reached to the architectural area.

HP Campaign_summary and analysis

HP has developed its creative marketing methods to attract customers by using $300M and rock star power. These attempts include offering the products such as paper doll, CD covers, business card templates which people can print by themselves. Unlike past advertising method, HP constructed a two-way network system between customers and the company. People who want to print for personal purposes and even small companies which want to make their own business cards can do this by using HP printing service and customized contents. Moreover, Gwen Stefani, a famous singer, is participating in this event. She can have chance to respond to her fans’ love and HP also can get some profits from the ad which features a famous rock star. HP’s strategy is to get people to see the printer not as a printing machine, but as a conversational tool which brings some excitement.
With these methods, HP is now leading a trend of advertising products and refreshing its image in positive and dynamic ways.

In every cases, printers rely on a connection to a computer and a computer’s most important role is to fuction as an part of online network. A lot of kinds of activities are performed online: managing blogs, cyber communication by messenger software, sharing images, etc. And so many images are flooded online. Consequently, it is more efficient for HP to focus on online users and help them print those resources, resulting in more profit for the company.

I have weaknesses, especially in using articales such as 'a, an and the' and tutor often pointed out those faults. And appropriate usage of adverb and tense is needed for some awkward expression. Moreover, In analysis, it is needed to explain my thoughts more specifically to make readers understand this writing easily.

What I’ve learned about writing artistic statement could be devided to three categories. First, the biographical statement is headed on the start in writing. This gives basic information about you: what is your background? when is your first artistic experience?, how you can pursuit your goal?, the most influential people in your life to broaden your perspective, etc. Presenting this background gives reader more chances to apprehend you as an artist more deeply and specifically. Also, the chronical achievement, followed by the motivation and specific explaination of each work, is needed for understanding your work. The former information about you will help people to understand why this person had to do artistic activity like this. Moreover, this will provide the most important components like subject, motivation, process, medium and so on. Consequently, this personal and artistic statement should be organized well in the sense of logic and emotions; The specific ideas in each process should be delievered clearly and effectively as you intend to. This might be possible to make the essay more attractive or appealing.
There were some missing points during revising my artistic statement. In the first revision by writing tutor, my writing had some mistakes to use correctly and some expressions were not clear for reader to understand although the writing itself could be estimated as a high leveled. And after Sang’s lecture and Guggenhime lecture, I realized my artistic statement make important fault not to mention about the most influential person who had affected me. Also, from my classmate, I was pointed out that there were some vague statements what I had done and what my work aimed for. After I heard about that, I revised my writing to be more clear to express my works’ intends and favorites, and influences from other artist and architects more persuasively. When I got the final revision from writing tutor, I came to find out the most frequently occurred mistakes in writing. It was making sentences to long and using some expressions which readers could not easily understand. So, lastly, I could think about not only important criteria of artistic statement, but also my faulty habits in writing.
If I have more chances to write artistic statement in next time, I will express my process and intends about my works more clearly, moreover about influential factors such as artists, architect or any other events. Also, in the sense of writing itself, since it used to making long sentences which make reader confused, I think I should express my thinking not too long, but more specifically and efficiently.

Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement_Final version

Before I came to the field of architecture, there was a long story, which began at Seoul National University where I was a Painting Major. During my early years the subjects of my paintings were personal things, such as the expression of ego and fantasy. But in the last year, I had some important turning points, not only in my painting style, but also in my life.
At that time, the village where lived was Sillim-dong, and some people sometimes refer to the Sillim-dong neighborhood in Seoul as the “hillside slums.” It was true that the area was underdeveloped compared to more affluent neighborhoods like Gangnam, which is far more popular among real estate investors and developers. Yet as someone who had lived there for a long time and had grown attached to the place, Sillim-dong’s lowly reputation seemed unfair to me. In opposition to this narrow and prejudiced view – which ranked both land and humans in a hierarchy of monetary value – I decided to record and render my neighborhood in my paintings from my own personal perspective. This became the first subject of my artistic work, which would be continued for a long time.
However, this kind of artistic work was limited; it did not have much of a direct effect on the real world. Searching anxiously for a method to more closely connect my works of art to society, I joined the public art group. The works of this new genre made it possible for me to approach my work in the city more creatively and dynamically. I managed several projects and exhibitions; these were all works about the city, which became the main subject in my works. Especially, I had interest in public space with the potential to give individual meaning, a place where human activities – both mental and physical – took place and affected lives. Along with my interest in public art, I tried to study the environment, such as public space, and it seemed a plausible solution to my ongoing concerns about my works.
During that time, I came to know the work of Vito Acconci, one of the most famous public artists. .His work is so impressive that my carrier and works have been influenced by him. His first works are about his early days. But later, his interests extended to outer space. He expanded his works to the field of architecture and landscape architecture. It was really amazing to discover an artist who made my concept of ideal artistic works, real. I have been encouraged and inspired by his works continuously since that time. Finally, I decided to study architecture in order to learn the practical approach and advance my works more creatively.
Finally, I came here to New York, where many cultures are co-existing. It offers me the opportunity to experiment with my works, which are a continuation of my studies in my undergraduate days. My study and works might seem a little different from each other, but I believe that this integrated approach, which collaborates with fields related to the city, can yield possible solutions for improving the conditions of residents more creatively and dynamically. Most of all, It will be a way to realize my dreams of continued artistic works as a hybrid artist and architect.
